MY TOP TIPS FOR JOB APPLICANTS
I get asked frequently what I believe my top tips are for candidates when applying for a new job, so I thought I’d share. Here are just a few tips to help nail your application:
- Have A Perfect CV – Ensure your CV is relevant to the job you are applying for. It has to be simple. No more than two pages. The average résumé gets read in 10 seconds. Be sure the content is on a level any high school senior could understand. In other words, the person looking at your résumé should be able to easily understand exactly whom you have worked for and what that company does.
- Write a Cover Letter – Writing a personalised cover letter for a particular job allows you to sell yourself in a better manner. Itis a way in which to convince the person reading your CV that you are a good candidate for the role. Things to include in your cover letter include: why you are a good fit for the role, what you can offer, your strengths & when you can start. It is a way to outline
- Address Selection Criteria – A lot of jobs you apply for will have selection criteria. Don’t ignore it as it is there for a reason. You may find that a lot of government jobs include a selection criteria and companies request it for a reason. Write a paragraph or two on each point highlighting your experience in that area and make sure not to stray from the point – keep it concise.
- Be Prepared & Do Your Research – Before any interview you attend you need to find out specific facts about the company which include details such as: products and services they offer, growth potential for the future, the location, offices, staff numbers, reputation and culture of the company as well as the name title of the person you are meeting.
